Cody and I took Alyssa to the hospital Thrusday because of how bad her reflux has gotten. She was to the point where she couldn't eat rice cereal because she would gag, hse would cough and spit up DURING drinking her bottle, and she would spit up bucket loads afterwards! It just seamed like she was starving but could never get enough to eat!
When we got there, they weighed her in at 13 lbs 8 oz. Last month, she was 13 lbs 4 oz.! They needed to get bloodwork done, so they wanted to put an iv in her to take some blood. They poked her twice in one arm and then once on each foot. They got a little blood from each foot, so they sent it to the lab, hoping it was enough. While waiting for the results, we got another barrium(sp?) swallow done. This was her 3rd one in her life! It showed that she still has reflux, but it's not that bad because she wasn't refluxing that fast(which was really frustrating considering she spits up so much, so fast at home!). When we got back to our room, we found out that the blood we sent to the lab wasn't enough to do tests on, so we had to poke her again. This time, we had a pediatric nurse help us out. She got the vein in one poke, filled up 3 tubes, and then tried to hook it up to the iv. Didn't work! It fell out and blood was everywhere! I felt so bad for my little girl! It stopped bleeding really fast, but still! An hour later, the results came back negative for any infection and dehydration. The dr spoke to the GI specialist at Primary Childrens Hospital and they recommended us trying out a lower dosage of zantac, another medicine, and switching to soy formula and a smaller bottle nipple. They also said that they would call us in a couple days to set up an appointment for 6 weeks! It's A LOT better than waiting until April! Now, we're back to step 1, hoping to get the help we need to get her better!
My little girl has had such bad luck with being sick and going to the hospital! 3 hospital trips, not including being born, in only 6 months!

I totally understand how it goes with acid reflux. They put Tait on previcid and liquid zantac, but it wasn't until I stopped nursing and gave him a lactose free formula that his spitting up got a little better. Now he has FINALLY outgrown the reflux and is putting on the pounds.
I used a Nuk bottles, the nipples are smaller and not so long. Anyway that is what worked for us. I hope for you and the baby that you find something that works. Poor girl!
